PHILOSOPHY

On Wanting Things We Don't Need

09 · 27 · 26·1 min read

Desire has little to do with possession; it is almost entirely an appetite for anticipation.

We walk past shop windows, browse through infinite catalogs, imagine ourselves inside coats we do not own and rooms we have never visited. In those moments, what we crave is not the wool or the wallpaper. We crave the imagined self that would inhabit them — a self that is untroubled, whole, and finished.

The moment the item arrives on the doorstep and the cardboard is torn open, the spell begins to fray. The object is undeniably real, and because it is real, it belongs to the flawed world where things collect dust and grow familiar.

The ache returns, not because the object failed, but because anticipation is the only thing that could ever sustain the illusion of completeness.

You have reached the end.

Perhaps the thought does not end here.
